  • It’s so much more than the EC. The EC was really the best solution that they could come up with to elect a single person to run the Executive in a time where it was hard to hold statewide elections, much less a nationwide one. Senators were appointed directly by a State’s legislature, and the President by electors appointed by the legislatures. This meant that the only Federal office that was directly voted on was Congress, making elections easier and much more local.

As long as elections were hyper-local, settling them based on a simple plurality of votes was practical, because it was also hard to coordinate nationally. The Founders did not want the same type of party-driven system they left in England. However, the big mistake was in keeping the FPTP voting after they switched to popular elections for Senate and the Presidency. That, coupled with better nationwide communication, directly contributed to out two-party system, and how backwards it is.

The two-party system directly contributed to America’s sliding into fascism, when the only alternative to fascism is itself too drunk on campaign cash to let new blood into the system. But the primary issue is how throughly Trumpism has infiltrated the Republican Party, where they willingly give up their checks on the Executive and let him break laws with impunity. The Founders explicitly distributed power because they thought ambitious people would not give up power willingly. Today’s Republicans are proving they were wrong.

  • You’re not wrong, but the Democratic Primary is not set up to pick the best candidate. It’s set up to coronate the one who is next in line.

When Obama won in 2008, it was actually an aberration. The party made sure to fix it in 2016, when thet shut down the old Socialist’s campaign in order to coronate the first woman President. How did that turn out?

If there were a primary in 2024, they would have put their finger on the scale again to pre-nominate someone. The only open question would have been if they were compelled to nominate someone without a penis again. It seems too many voters see having a penis as a requirement for the job. So if it came down to the quasi-incumbent, penis-lacking VP against an individual experienced, penis-having contender, then it might have an actual contest.

  • It’s definitely something you can learn in just a few lessons, particularly if you are just driving around town here and there. There’s a rhythm and muscle memory to it, and once you get it, it becomes super easy.

I think I traded in my last stick-shift (a Jetta) 13+ years ago, and there are still times when I am driving and my left foot instinctively moves toward an invisible clutch…

  • It’s possible that this time is different.

Trump’s budget will absolutely bust the deficit, because it relies on “savings” from DOGE that doesn’t exist, and uses that to cut taxes further. There is at least token opposition from these folks who have campaigned on reducing the deficit and know their party is lying about it.

But let’s face it. It is more likely that this is all just performative. These guys hold things up just long enough to get some token concessions, and they can campaign on the fact that they “stand up” to both sides.
