I’ve been in situations like that, where I was more than happy to pull over and let them pass, but I missed all the safe spots because I couldn’t see them while being blinded. I had to drive slower because they made it harder to see ahead on dangerous mountain roads, too. Bloody idiots.
I recently had to get a new card cancelled and reissued because it was sent to an old address. I definitely updated my address with that bank, but it didn’t stick.
I’ve updated my address with other companies and later found that different parts of their system kept different addresses.
Not too long ago I even worked on the address changing section of a finance company’s website. That project was a nightmare, and I learned a lot about why address changes are much harder to implement than you would think.
I really wanted to spend more time ironing out edge cases on that one, but I was under a lot of pressure to get it delivered because some genius had already committed to removing the forms we already used for this.
So basically it’s possible this person did change their address, at least for some things with that bank, and fixing it might not be something they can do without just the right specific instruction. As long as the bank can demonstrate a good faith attempt to do it right, they are legally covered. Sometimes it’s cheaper to compensate for very rare customer losses that result in edge case fuckups, than to pay developers what it would take to fix it properly.
It depends who you ask.
In practice, the former.
I want to believe some Labor politicians are the latter, but afraid to show it because it’s punished the party politically in the past. There are definitely right and left factions within the party, it’s just not clear what the balance is.
Perhaps you have to experience it from the outside. It’s hard to put my finger on, but there’s a noticeable difference in how Americans see race.
Here in Australia we’re quite diverse, but within a generation people tend to act very similarly, regardless of background. There are still differences, and they should be celebrated, but I’d say we have more in common as just Australians. There’s a tipping point where what’s most important is either a common national identity, or ethnic identity. It feels like we are just barely on different sides of that line - which is funny because Americans are more into overt displays of patriotism.
For example, we won’t claim to be Irish because our grandparents were. That’s probably the most common differentiator.
That said, racism exists here like everywhere else, and is a problem. That may be a different discussion though, because it’s the minority.
You know what… the more I think about, it shouldn’t be any different between our countries. But it’s an impression everyone seems to have so there must be something to it. Maybe it’s because the United States is relatively insular? It means the differences within your country are more significant. Australians have a lot of interaction with other nationalities (tourism is an important industry and we love to travel) so our national identity becomes more significant, because that’s what we’re often representing. Europe would be similar with its relaxed borders.
Bring more warm stuff than you think you need. An extra blanket, beanie, thick socks (and spare pairs).
Also sun protection. Broad hat and sunscreen. Even if you think it won’t be sunny.
Wet wipes can go a long way with cleanliness.
More drinking water than you expect.
That should cover the basic comforts. For the rest it sounds like you can just go with the flow.
I didn’t know that at the time, pre-diagnosis, but it’s so obvious now.
Cocaine makes absolutely no sense to me. Are you having a good time, letting loose and getting relaxed with friends while enjoying a few beverages? Here, take this substance that will make you disturbingly sober. Everything is clear, level, and so very normal. Fun huh?
At a music festival, actually able to listen to a complete song without my mind wandering… is this why people take stimulants?
Yeah, I’ve seen it from hypersexual people who seem to have unprocessed shame and need to believe their own behaviour is justified by being a universal human trait. The existence of asexuality threatens that.
I’ve been seeing a lot of reports lately of white people getting screwed over like this. They all had one thing in common: women traveling without male company.
I haven’t encountered Brendan yet, but I look forward to yet another reality-bleed.
I just got into Cyberpunk 2077, and too many parts of it are leaking into the real world. This could be a Delamain interaction.
It’s actually easier to just use it every time. Deciding whether you need to is cognitive load that’s better spent on other things.
Yes, and the all new TwinkedIn is already experiencing a surge in active users! Most of them are coming from Grindr for some reason, but it still counts!
I will never understand why people with power are this petty.
They probably think it’s a huge flex, but it makes them look like the most pants-shittingly immature little cry babies.
Real power is not devoting brain cycles to things that should be beneath you.
This would have been the real power play. Greenland says they will roll out the red carpet and welcoming party of locals. On arrival, the locals are bears and the carpet isn’t red. Yet.
At my last job we had a lot of old code, and our supposedly smartest framework people couldn’t be bothered learning front end properly. So there was a mix of methods for passing values to the front end, but nobody seemed to think of just passing JSON and parsing it into a single source of truth. There was so much digging for data in hidden columns of nested HTML tables, and you never knew if booleans would be “true”, “TRUE”, “1”, or “Y” strings.
Never mind having to unformat currency strings to check the value then format them back to strings after updating values.
I fixed this stuff when I could, but it was half baked into the custom framework.
I had a look at the Smite roster, and yeah it’s cool to see some Celtic and Polynesian representation there.
I would personally love to see indigenous Australian mythology represented much at all in media. It would be challenging because you’re dealing with hundreds of individual nations, most of which had their culture taken from them before it could be well documented, but there are a few recurring themes to draw from.
The closest thing to a god entity would be the rainbow serpent, which you could argue is related to common global themes of flying serpents. Similarly, the yowie has almost spiritual status in some places, but is similar to yetis and sasquatch. I recently learned about the Seven Sisters myth being another one.
Which mythologies would you like to see represented?
I think this would apply to all media, and probably just comes down to some traditions being more familiar and having more cultural impact in general.
Bazzite is made for gaming, so it’s a safe choice in that regard.
They recently released a DX (developer experience) spin, which I’ve been running lately. That feels very similar to the other atomic Fedora developer spins, so it has a lot of creative software working well. I’ve used GIMP, Inkscape, Darktable etc. on it, and there’s even some nice automation to install/update DaVinci Resolve.
They’re also working on a GDX (game developer experience) spin, which should be even better. You might want to check that out when it’s ready.
