People had much less empathy than they do now. Steven Pinker talks about this in The Better Angels of Our Nature.

I think it’s kind of hard to describe if you can’t do it. I don’t literally see the cup; I’m imagining that I can see the cup. Can you imagine other senses? For example, can you imagine how chocolate tastes, or what it sounds like when somebody’s knocking on a door?
This is actually the case. It’s called aphantasia. Most people can think of a cup and an image of a cup will appear in their mind. People with aphantasia can’t do that.
It is, but CDs are much too small.
I need to learn how to do this.

MP3’s what?
If you don’t like ADHD memes, then why are you here?
ADHD is like autism. It’s a new diagnosis, but people have likely had the symptoms for centuries. It just didn’t have a name until now. This will keep happening as more and more is learned about the brain.
If sounds like you might have ADHD. Whether or not you want to get treated depends upon how badly it affects your life. Personally, my symptoms interfere with my long-term planning, and that has made my life much worse.
And yet, if enough people did that, you would start to question your own eyes.
I never saw my mother and sister having to prove or defend the point that they are women.
Is anybody saying that they aren’t?
What do you think a trans woman is, if not a woman?
So, my doctor starts me out on the non-stimulant medications, even though they’re known to be less effective, because the stimulants are so tightly controlled. It’s ass-backwards. I feel like crap and my symptoms are marginally better.
It could still be heavily regulated if they sold it to everybody. You’d only have to worry if you were buying it on the black market, but that’s true in any case.
Methamphetamines used to be legal, and they were advertised that way: take this pill, get more energy, and stay alert and focused at work. If I had to guess, I’d say they became illegal once people started overdosing. I’m not defending it, but I think it’s interesting that you used to be able to buy it over the counter and now you can’t anymore. Same thing with cocaine, actually, and I’m sure that’s the same problem. People get addicted, use too much, and die.
That’s funny. I have no problem drawing circles in GIMP. What are you getting stuck on?
People learned on Photoshop, and then they’re upset because GIMP does things differently. I guarantee you if somebody had learned on GIMP first, it would be the other way around.
There’s nothing intuitive about Photoshop. If you pick it up with zero knowledge and try to do anything, you can’t. You have to take a class to learn how to use it, same as GIMP.
Sorry, Joplin is a nightmare. I want something that stores Markdown in flat files, not a database with changing versions where one version of the db doesn’t work in another version.
I tried to port the database over from another system, but the new version of Joplin wouldn’t read from the old version’s database, and it would corrupt the database when I tried to open it. What a crock of shit. I had to figure out how to dump the data from the tables using sqlite.
I use nb now instead. It is a bit wonky because it uses NodeJS, but you can view and edit files in a web browser, and it saves each entry as a .md file, which is the sane and rational way to do it. So, if nb ever fucks off, I have all my work in a directory of Markdown files, not some broken-ass sqlite database.
Douglas Crockford has a whole chapter of these in his latest book. There’s also this classic video.
